TEALIVE X MAMEE: SPICY MI BOBA!! Pelik tapi BOBA!

The food industry seems to be putting on their creative caps these days. A lot of new recipes, new flavors and collaborations were being experimented and introduced in the market. I remember there was a time where Malaysians were quite addicted to cheese that a lot of food players have incorporated cheese into their recipes. Cheese in rice, cheese in vegetables, cheese with chicken, cheese in everything! Another famous trend was the BOBA. Boba stalls plummeted like mushrooms in an open field.

I wasn't really a fan at first but the hype was too strong that I had to give it a try. My first Boba was from Tealive many years ago. During that time, there were only Tealive and Chatime that dominated the industry. My favourite from Tealive would be Hazelnut Milk Tea with Boba. Now, Boba are famous served with milk and brown sugar. And ohh boyyy, the industry are now super packed with many Boba milk tea franchises. These franchises better come out with new menus to beat their competitors.

And it seems like Tealive have stepped up their game with their latest Boba creation in collaboration with MAMEE. Yup, you read it right, MAMEE; the instant noodle! Sounds a bit off maybe? Their new limited edition creation is called Spicy Mi Boba. They claimed that this is not your usual cup of noodle because the bouncy and spicy noodles from MAMEE are uniquely combined with the goodness of pearl milk tea from Tealive! So... the soup is actually milk tea?? And to add more excitement to their new treat, the Spicy Mi Boba can be served HOT or COLDPELIK tapi BOBA!

The first time I saw these posters, I thought that there were two versions of the Spicy Mi Boba. But it was actually only one version where you actually pour hot water to soften the noodle and later can put ice if you prefer it cold. I honestly was a bit skeptical about the idea of eating noodle with milk tea. but I would never know unless I try it right! The Spicy Mi Boba can be purchased in Tealive's website or walk-in to their Tealive stalls starting 5th Oct 2020. Since I couldn't find the time to find a Tealive stall, I ordered them online.

As usual, for every online purchase, we need to sign up an account then only we can start shopping. There are three sets of the Spicy Mi Boba. You can choose to buy either 3 cups at RM15.90, 6 cups at RM29.90 or 24 cups at RM109.90. I chose the 3 cups and with delivery cost of RM7 which claimed to be delivered within 7 working days. Unfortunately, this limited edition mi boba is not available in Sabah and Sarawak. Only available in Peninsular Malaysia. The Spicy Mi Boba expiry date is 12 months after the date of manufacturing.

My order arrived on the fourth day and I just couldn't wait any longer! I tear off the lid, pour hot water, closed the lid for 3 minutes, add the boba and EAT!

The triplets that arrived on my doorstep.

Read the instructions carefully before starting the journey.

I made a short video unboxing and preparing the Spicy Mi Boba. Do check it out.

So here goes MY VERY HONEST REVIEW on the SPICY MI BOBA by Tealive X MAMEE:

1) The package comes with a fork and a straw each. Yes, STRAW! because that's how we normally drink our Boba tea.

2) As I pour the hot water, the smell comes up. There was a very strong teh tarik smell with a pinch of flowery sweet scent. I don't know what is that. It's like a jasmine tea fragrance.

3) They claimed that the noodle/soup is spicy, it's not that spicy at all! Well, just a wee bit, and stings a little on the lips for few seconds then it wear off. Maybe because the milk tea is sweet?

4) The boba are packed in their sweet syrup (most probably brown sugar syrup). It is soft and slightly chewy but it appears to be very small. Really small, in fact, while eating them, I can't tell if I'm chewing the boba or the noodles because it doesn't feel any different.

5) Taste wise, I really really HATE the taste. It really tasted like instant noodles that have been soaked in teh tarik. No joke. It doesn't tickle my taste buds at all.

6) I added some ice and drink the soup with the straw. It tasted like Teh tarik that had been sprinkled with chilli powder! really really weird guys.

7) The colour itself is not appetizing. The smell is funny and the taste is weird.

This does not look appetizing. I have another two cups, if you guys wanted to try can give me a buzz. I don't think I will ever repeat this dish again.

Wow, I can't believe I actually tried this new creation. I couldn't even finish the whole cup. Oh heck, I didn't even eat a quarter of it. You can buy them if you wish to try. But I'm warning that it is not worth it. Boba drink should remain a drink, and instant noodle should never be mixed with boba tea milk!

Toodles for now,
