POTTY TRAINING IN 3 DAYS

Hello and Assalamualaikum,

As you guys are aware, I have an adorable, bright and cheerful 3 years old son at home who enjoys playing with his charming, loud and funny 6 years old sister. During the previous round of MCO back in March, we succeeded in day time potty-training him just within 3 days! yess that's right, 3 days! (pat myself on the back. what a glorious achievement!) well, this does not include night time though. We have not started on that yet.

These two cuties are my potty training students. Both have graduated successfully.

Today's post will be talking about diapers and potty training. So most probably parents should take a good note on this. To be honest, potty training my daughter 2 year ago was not a pleasant experienced. My daughter has quite a firm (read: rebellious) mind that she just simply refuses doing things that I told her to like; pee time, let's go to the toilet. She gave me the "I'll just pee at where I am standing okay mommy" attitude. and she did! uh ohhh. stress alert! Potty training her took me more than a year, yup that long!

We almost gave up until she was 4 years old, that we decided to bring her to Toys R Us and ask her what she wanted most. She picked a cuddly PinkFong soft toy and thought that she could brought it back home. But no no no sugarr, unless she pee and poo in the potty for a month then only we shall reward her with the PinkFong soft toy. Fast forward to a month later. She got her PinkFong and I got my kid potty trained! yeahh success!

The reward, we ordered from Shopee because it was cheaper there.

My son on the other hand, took this potty training to another level. He's a champion guys, I am beyond proud. He listened, he followed and he accomplished well. Having two children with different characters applies for different method. With my son, there was no need for any reward system unlike his sister, reward is her life! My son was contented enough with praises, hugs and kisses. but then again, this may or may not apply to other kids. So here are what I have learnt on potty training small children:

1. Before starting the process, try to educate your child about the potty. Tell him that this is where we should pee and poo. Explained to him that the toilet bowl is comfy for sitting and and much easier to clean the waste compared to the diapers. Tell them that mommy and daddy uses this toilet everyday and its easy. Let them explore the toilet. Allow them to flush so they could find joy in it and won't be afraid of it.

2. Make sure your child can address properly between pee and poo. I often asked my kids, "adik kencing ke beyak?" and if they poo, I said "wahh adik beyak laaa" so they eventually picked up the idea that beyak is when you poo and kencing is when you pee. Doesn't matter la what word you use. Some use number 1 for pee and number 2 for poo. "adik nak no 1 ke nak no 2" haha like that lor.

3. Rolled up all your carpets at home. We do not want accidents on the carpet! yikess. on the floor is still easy to clean but on the carpet....hurmmm.

Our living room floor is empty as we rolled all our carpets and stuck them under the TV cabinet.

4. STAY AT HOME FOR A SOLID 3 DAYS. This is crucial because we want the child to be comfortable using the toilet and for them to established the pattern of informing you that they need to use the toilet. This three days is important to teach your kid to hold their pee in time before reaching the toilet. Imagine if you guys are at the mall and suddenly your kid needs to pee and the toilet is far reached! woahhh. You'd be running for your life mann. Your kid may slipped and pee on the floor, and you will be left with HUGE EMBARRASMENT. Good luck on that.

5. No diaper-wearing at all during the day. Let them breeze! haha. okay okay, Please buy undies for them. would be weird having them running around at home butt naked. Though they would love this haha.

My son's dinosaur undies. He will be embarrassed to find out mommy show his undies to the world hahaha.

6. Bring them to the toilet every two hours. Yes, every two hour or whenever your kids showing any signal to pee or poo. Both my kids would bend down a little when they wanted to poo. So whenever I see them doing it, off we go to the potty.

7. Invest in a cute potty for them. Sometimes the normal toilet bowl is too big for them and whenever they sit down on it,  they are sucked into it haha. This would cause them feeling uncomfortable and they might lose interest.

The potty was bought 5 years ago and can be used for both kids.

8. Lots of words of encouragement! Do give them high five after finishing the business and praise them. A LOT!

9. Monitor your child's water intake. If they take a lot of water, be ready to bring them to the toilet often. PARENTS MUST NOT BE LAZY.

We used this water bottle to monitor our son's water intake. The more he drinks the more he pees.

10. Do not let them wear diaper unless to sleep because this would confuses them. My son was confused once and we actually had to start all over again. But this was mainly our fault because we were busy and was afraid that our son might pee accidentally because we were so busy to take him to the toilet on time.

After the three days period, monitor your kids for any accidents. If there are no accidents for the next three days, your kid is ready to go out diaper free! But please ensure that before stepping out of the house, your kid pee first. Once arrived at your destination, ask your kid if he needs to pee. Whenever you found a public toilet, bring your kid to pee. Bring a back up diaper in your bag and control your kid's water intake. Once at home, let him drink all he wants.

The most important part is to be patient. Be nice to your kid, and don't scare them. If these methods did not work, do apply a reward system. If still not working well....best of luck then. haha.

Good Luck!

Toodles,

ArTiza S.
